Indian passport provides easy access to 60 countries according to the most recent Henley passport index rankings. 

Most powerful passports

Japan, Singapore and South Korea have the most powerful passports in the world. For the sixth year in a row a Japanese passport allows easy travel into 193 countries and remains the most powerful.

Singapore and South Korea which arranged second and third in the Henley passport index give access to 192 countries. 

Indian passport

According to Henley passport index statistics,  the Indian passport has dropped four positions to 87th place on the list of the world's most powerful passports, which allows visa-free travel to 60 countries. 

It is worth noting that the Indian passport gained 83rd position in the first quarter of 2022 up from 90th the previous year.

As a result, holders of Indian passports may now access 60 countries without a Visa.

Indians can get e-visa for 21 countries

Armenia, Australia, Azerbaijan, Bahrain, Barbados, Benin, Botswana, Combodia, Colombia, Cote D'Ivoire (Ivory Coast), Djibouti,, Ethiopia, Gabon, Georgia, Guinea Bissau, Hong Kong, Kazakhstan, Kenya, Kyrgyzstan Republic, Laos, Lesotho, Madagascar, Moldova, Myanmar, Malaysia, New Zealand, Oman, Papua New Guinea, Russian Federation (specific areas of Far Eastern Federal District), Saint Lucia, Saint Vincent and Grenadines, Sierra Leone, Singapore, South Korea, Sri Lanka, Suriname, Taiwan, Tajikistan, Tanzania, Thailand, Turkey, Uganda, Uzbekistan, UAE, Vietnam, Zambia, Zimbabwe 

Russian travel papers rank 50th allowing easy entry to 119 countries 
China scored 69th with access to 80 countries 
India ranked 87th while Afghanistan's passport is the least valuable granting entry to only 27 countries. 

Most favored destination for Indian immigrants

The ministry of Home Affairs informed Parliament on Tuesday that over 3.9 lakh Indians have given up their citizenship in the last three years with data suggesting that the United States of America has emerged as the most favored destination for Indian immigrants.

According to data presented in Parliament by the Home Ministry, 78,000 Indians become US citizens in the last year alone out of 1.63 lakh persons who had relinquished their Indian citizenship. 

In 2021, 163,370 Indian surrendered their Indian passports. 

In the three years, from 2019 to 2021, more than 3.92 Lakh persons have left India and given up their Indian passports, of these  170,795 people took up American citizenship.

Why Indians are fleeing the nation

The home Ministry has not provided a concrete reasons why Indians are fleeing the nation. However, one may optimize great to a foreign country because of a better lifestyle, environment, education, job possibilities and ease of doing business.

No Dual citizenship

Unlike several other nations India does not permit dual citizenship and all Indian natives who obtain other nationalities must relinquish their Indian citizenship. 

Overseas citizen of India card

Indians who renounce their Indian citizenship can still apply for an overseas citizen of India card, which allows them to live, work or establish a business in India.
