Challenges in immigratation to Spain for non-European citizens

Hello guys. Let us start talking about some legal procedures of how to move to Spain. We started 10 years ago when we decided to learn Spanish for no reason. Basically, we just love the language. We would learning whatever in Spanish and after few months, we believe we could have the basic conversations with the natives and after a few more months, almost by accident, we went to Spain. We didn't know what to do with our life. We just decided to travel a little bit and get to know places, get to know people & to decide where we would like to live.

The country was Spain. We traveled around the world and we ended up in Spain. Basically, we love the experience of Spain. We love the chill attitude, the people, the food, the lifestyle, & everything. So we made a decision to move to Spain as soon as possible.

We started looking for some legal ways to do it as we are citizens of a country that is not a part of the European Union (EU). It is a little bit complicated. Basically, if you're an EU citizen you can relocate with no problems. But, if you come from Non-EU countries or the rest of the world, you will have to struggle a little bit with some visas legal procedures and you have to keep documents ready for that.

There are several ways to go to Spain. The most common are:

- get a job contract
- asylum
- marriage
- study

Investor visas

We will not talk about investor visas. Because we guess if you're reading this article, you don't have half a million euros for getting visa. We don't know we would be wrong.

Fiance visas

We'll not talk about the fiance visas and they're pretty simple and they're basically the same in every country.

Asylum

To move to Spain we would be get a job because study visa or come as a refugee could be possible, however, for most of us coming to Spain as a refugee would not be an option unless you come from the problematic countries like Venezuela or Syria, but many people actually choose this option. Every year the numbers of refugees who come to Spain as Asylum doubles. In 2019, Spain received up to 120,000 requests for Asylum. According to the Spanish top ranking newspaper, only one case out of four gets accepted. So as you can see it's kind of a lottery and you're not likely to get it but there are many loopholes in the law. And there are many people who take advantage of it.

Get a job contract

Get a job sounds appealing but you first of all have to consider the unemployment rate in Spain which is at the moment up to 17% in the whole year. So this is a very very big issue because the unemployment rate in Spain is one of the highest in Europe.

Employers always prioritize Spanish citizens

Second thing is to consider that the employers always prioritize Spanish citizens. If they cannot find somebody who is from Spanish origin, they would look for foreigners living in Spain from all around Europe (EU Citizen) and only after that, if they cannot find somebody for the vacant position they have, they would consider somebody who comes from outside of the European Union (Non European Citizen).

You should be exceptional

There are more conditions, of course. You have to have a highly specialized skills that is to say you have to be actually "Exceptional", then you have a chance to get the work visa.

Demands of company for providind a job contract

Anyway, you have to look for the industry that lacks specialist in Spain. Only very few people got the work visa for non-specialized position, but this depends on your luck. We first decided to go this way and we started sending our CV to big companies which would be able to contract a foreigner but, really, quickly we realized that this is not easy.

One company contacted us and the first question they asked us if we have a work permit for Spain. Of course, we didn't have the work permit. You have to have work permit in order to get a contract from the companies.

But the only way to get a work permit in Spain is by actually getting the contract first. It's a little bit complicated. We don't know if we explained it well, but the company has to offer you a contract first, and after that you apply for the work permit. It's not the other way around but not many companies are willing to do that.

Study visa

The last option for us was to go study. Many people decide to enroll in the language course to learn Spanish, but we found this way to be a bit costly. Depending on the city, you are going to pay fees for language course. You would pay average 3,000 euros per semester, so that it would make 6,000 euros a year, which is kind of expensive considering the fact that the Spanish is quite an easy language to learn and you can do it almost for free.

We were looking for the opportunities to get higher education in Spain. University master programs. It's relatively easy to apply for a master program and it is much cheaper than in other countries. We paid less than 900 euros a year for a master program, but this totally depend on university & province. In other cities, in other regions of state, it is a bit more expensive.

There was another problem. Our Spanish was not good enough to study a master program. We basically was looking for some programs in English and there are some problems in English in every University. It is not easy to find one in English which is suitable and under budget.

Visa for Spain

There is a long process of in getting all the documents ready and apply for Visa. Actually you get 1st visa only for three months, but once you enter in Spain, you have three months to apply for resident card. NIE (Nacional identidad de Extranjeros) is for foreigners as a identity card or resident card and after that you are actually officially and legally live in Spain.

Let us know if you're in Spain. We just want to say that dreams do come true if you work hard for them, if you believe that everything is going to be alright.
