How to Immigrate to Romania for Non-EU

Today we talk how to obtain the Romanian residency permittee.

What is a residency permit?

The residence permit is issued to Non-EU citizens only. So if you are a EU citizen, you donot need a residency permit, you need to getting a residential certificate of registration. The Residency permit is an official document issued from the Romanian state which allows you to stay long-term in Romania.

Where do you get this residence permit?

The residence permit is issued from the Romanian immigration office. But to go to the Romanian immigration office, you need to come to Romania first with a long term stay visa.

How long is the permit valid?

It depends on purpose of your stay. It is issued either for one year, two years or five years.

- Two years residency permit is usually for high qualified workers.

- One year residency permit is for the general term, but you can go even below that turn, for example, if you have a six months work agreement in Romania, you're only get the resistance permit for those six months. If the contract extends with another one year or six months or eight months, you'll get another residency permit for that time.

- Five years residency permit: Usually this should only for family members of Romanian citizens or EU citizens. You need to go immigration office with a file of your documents.

This file of documents must contain:

-Request for obtaining the Romanian residency permit,

- Your passport,

- Your visa which states that you enter Romania for a long-term purpose,

- A proof of living in Romania. You must proof that you live legally and your contract is registered in Romania. Therefore, if you are coming and staying at the an Airbnb, that will not count as a legal document to prove where you are staying. You need a lease agreement, free lease agreement or declaration from the owner who take you in own house.

- A proof to show the purpose of staying in Romania. For example, if you are foreign citizen & employee in Romania, you should have work agreement. You should have proof that the agreement was registered and that is currently available.
- a proof that you are insured in the public health system. The first time when you apply, it will not be requested by the immigration office, but the second and third time you are applying, the immigration office will ask for the health insurance proof. This proof is usually you should get from the health authority, and depending on case to case you either need to ensure yourself through your own real or declared income that you have in Romania or other step necessary in order to get that proof. If you do not have the proof that you are insured you will not obtain the Romanian residency permit.

After Romanian residency permit

On getting Romanian residency permit, take into consideration:

- First of all, this is a short-term residency permit. Therefore, you should stay in Romania based on that purpose and do not change it. If you have a purpose for studies, for example, you should stay in Romania for studies, but you will also have the ability to employ yourself for four hours per day in order to work in Romania and better integrating the Romanian Society.

-If you are moving before your residency permit expires, you have 30 days in order to go to the immigration office to declare that you change your place of living and they will issue a new residence permit to you. In case of you are losing the Residency permit, you have three days in order to declare that you lost it and to submit the documentation to get a new residency permit.

Residency permit what does it allow you to do?

You can stay long time in Romania.

No one will is going to have anything with you as long as you have the permit.

When you are going to be identified by the police, you should show the passport and the Residency permit, so both documents you need to have with you.

You can only show the Residency permit. That's okay. But only with passport you might get in trouble if you do not have the residents permit.

Important

- If you are traveling, keep in mind that if you are looking to obtain the permanent residency status in Romania as a non-EU citizen, you should not leave the Romanian soil for more than 10 months within the five years. That's the most important part that many Forest citizens lack. They are traveling too much and they are staying out of the country too much. Therefore, when they are applying for permanent residency, they do not qualify even though that they spend more time.

-If you are staying outside of Romania for more than six months with a residency permit. According to the law, it's getting void. So when you come back, you might find out that the Border Police say you that the residence permit is no longer valid, and you should go through the whole procedure all over again in order to get a new residency permit.
